A Global Movement? Citizen Science Around the World from a Scientific-social-cultural-political Context Organizer: Jessie Cappadonna - Queensland University of Technology Regional variation in the social-cultural-political context of citizen science leads to important variation in its diversification and growth. This symposium will provide an overview of regional similarities and differences between citizen science initiated in Australia, China, Europe, and the United States, as well as the opportunities and challenges that this offers to global citizen science projects. The state of citizen science, including primary drivers, development strategies utilized, and support mechanisms (e.g. financial, structural, and institutional) will be considered. Speakers will marshal regional project examples to highlight citizen science goals, diversity, and outcomes. Regional efforts underway and visions for the future will be discussed.
